Becoming bilingual: a real strength

School trip to London, from Greenwich to Tower Bridge

16 October 2026

From 4 to 10 April 2026, the children of Da Vinci Private School spent a week in London.

On the programme: monuments, museums, a musical, and a whole week in an English-speaking city.

English every day, in the heart of London

In London, English is heard in the street, read on museum labels and needed to understand what is going on around you.

The children could hear it and use it in real situations, putting the words and phrases practised at school to concrete use. That is what sets immersion apart from English lessons.

Monuments, museums and shows

At the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, the children lined up on the Prime Meridian, the line used as the reference for measuring longitude and time all over the world. A very physical way to grasp an abstract idea.

The programme took in the city’s great landmarks: the Tower of London, HMS Belfast, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Tower Bridge and the area around 10 Downing Street. A chance to learn about British history and the country’s institutions, in front of buildings that are centuries old.

For science and culture, three museums: the British Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum, to connect with what is learned in class. Curiosity feeds on visits like these.

The trip also made room for spectacle. On the programme: the musical The Lion King, the waxworks at Madame Tussauds and London seen from above, from the London Eye.

A week away from home

A school trip is also a week of group life, away from the routines of school and home.

The children stayed at the YHA London St Paul’s hostel, in separate rooms for girls and boys, with the teaching team. Getting ready in the morning, keeping up with the group on public transport, eating together, looking out for others: every day called for independence and a sense of responsibility.

These shared days leave memories the children have in common.

Other trips

The school has also organised a trip to Copenhagen. These trips extend what the children learn in class: a language used on the spot, places seen in person, another culture experienced up close.
